Dr. Craig Thompson

Dr. Craig Thompson joined Macdonald Hotels and Resorts in September 2006 and was tasked with creating a new style of training and educational institution. CATHM, the Centre of Applied Hospitality & Tourism Management, is the result.

Prior to returning to the UK, Dr Thompson was Academic Director of Swiss Education Group, where he enjoyed overall responsibility for all academic matters and developments in what is now Switzerland's largest provider of hospitality education. Under his direction the Group expanded from a single school in one campus (SHMS, Swiss hotel Management School at Caux) hosting 500 students each year; to three schools across four campuses, offering a range of BA, MA and even PhD programmes attracting some 2000 in-house students each year!

Before SHMS, Dr Thompson taught and managed programmes in academic institutions in the UK, New Zealand and Australia.

Prior to entering academia Dr Thompson held positions in both the public and private sectors of the tourism and hospitality industries, including a spell as the Tourism Officer for the county of Wiltshire.

Dr Thompson researched for his doctorate in tourism and entrepreneurship at Strathclyde University, where he had previously completed a Master of Science in Tourism. He has undertaken several research and consultancy projects and has authored a number of journal articles in addition to delivering numerous refereed papers at leading conferences.
