The importance of hospitality and tourism to the UK economy cannot be exaggerated. The sector employs nearly 2 million people, which is over 7% of the workforce, and generates over £70 billion annually. What's more the hospitality and tourism sectors continue to expand year after year, meaning that employment opportunities are ever more plentiful, varied and rewarding. And the 2012 Olympics means this trend WILL continue.
Yet the sectors have traditionally been characterised by problems.. they fail to attract adequate numbers of graduates... and graduates that enter the industry have been criticised for having insufficient practical know how, professionalism and, above all, service ethic.. retention of graduates is poor. Much of the blame has been levelled at the distance between industry and academia.
CATHM is an educational centre driven by and embedded (literally!!) within the hospitality industry. Combining the expertise and resources of both sectors, the Centre has been created with the specific aim of addressing the problems facing hospitality. By adopting the Swiss hotel school approach to applied learning, professionalism and service ethic a recipe for change and improvement has been created... the hospitality revolution has begun.
