ILM Diploma

The Programme

The Diploma in Management is awarded by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM). The ILM is the UK’s premier body for leadership and management qualifications, with a reputation for providing high quality, industry relevant programmes. In 2004-5 almost 75,000 learners registered for an ILM qualification and six finalists in the Scottish Training Awards were ILM centres.

The ILM Diploma in Management is a fully approved level 5 qualification on the national qualifications framework. As such, the ILM Diploma is a nationally recognised, ensuring diplomats are valued and respected by industry. Indeed, candidates who achieve the ILM Diploma in Management are eligible to apply to the ILM for the minimum grade of membership (MInstLM).

Is the Programme For You?

The ILM Diploma in Management is designed for those people who are likely to be either practising or aspiring senior managers, particularly those who are already in post but have had little or no formal training. The programme will enable suitable candidates to assess knowledge and understanding of key activities relating to a manager’s role, as well as facilitating the development of skills to improve personal effectiveness. In short, the ILM will enhance the skills and prospects of anyone who successfully completes it!

Moreover, the programme can generate significant returns for the business units (hotels/ departments) the diplomats work within, in terms of cost savings and quality improvements in the workplace.

There are no formal entry requirements, but participants should be practising or potential senior managers with a background that will enable them to benefit from the programme. Most benefit will be gained if participants have prior experience of management at first line management level, though this is not essential.

Programme details

The ILM Diploma in Management comprehensively covers the full range of responsibilities of the senior manager. It aims to give managers the foundation for their formal development and advancement in this role. The programme is designed to improve delegates’ performance in the organisation through its strong focus on their specific job role.

The full Diploma consists of an induction and seven units, plus tutorial support. Each unit comprises seven to nine segments, which have been specially selected to optimise the benefits and returns to the individuals who undertake the programme.

The whole programme will take a minimum of 220 guided learning hours, plus time for assessment, to provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to perform effectively in the high-pressure world of the 21st century.

Delivery

Delivery of the programme has been specifically designed for the hospitality industry and takes account of the nature and demands of employment within the sector. Delivery will be by selected qualified and experienced trainers, principally Dr Craig Thompson, Managing Director of the CATHM, Centre of Applied Tourism and Hospitality Management and Helen Miller MCIPD from Greenhouse Training.

The Diploma is delivered through open learning with workshops, supported self-learning and applied learning. The programme will train staff (in groups of 12 to 15) in the practical skills of team management.

  • The programme will be delivered over one year.
  • The application process will include a thorough screening and interview process to select appropriate candidates.
  • Delivery will commence with a comprehensive induction workshop.
  • The programme consists of seven units, each lasting approximately six weeks.
  • Workshops - delivered on site are utilised to present key theoretical input.
  • Open learning manuals are provided for each non-workshop unit. The manuals include activities, exercises and self-assessment questions to help participants check their progress and knowledge and understanding.
  • Assessment is work-based using assignments that test the application of skills acquired from the course in the workplace. There are no examinations.
  • As part of their assessment, participants complete a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) plan, which enables candidates to reflect on and assess their own development.
  • All candidates are required to complete a substantial management report, but as this is introduced early in the programme and referred to throughout the year, participants are well prepared for and supported in this undertaking.
  • A high level of assistance is provided through the workshops, learning sets, conference calls and the ongoing support of the Programme Manager.
  • The programme concludes in final presentation and the assessment of work by an external verifier.
  • A graduation ceremony will be held at which successful participants will receive their well-earned ILM Diploma in Management.
